Why do Chinese people (generally) prefer drinking hot water?

I like drinking room-temperature or cold water.

Why?
Is there any evidence that hot water is better than cold water?

Chinese people prefer drinking hot water because they believe that cold water destroys your stomach. They also believe that hot water is healthier than any other drink. No, there is no evidence that hot water is better. However, it is true that cold water isn't exactly the best thing.

Most of you have completely missed the point. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (which is correctly referenced by a number of people), the stomach is the "oven" of the digestive system. Digestion requires energy for your stomach to "cook" the food, by raising the temperature of what you eat so that it can interact with bacteria and enzymes that break down into nutrients that the body can use. Cold water at meal times means your stomach acids have to work harder to get food to the ideal point of digestion. It doesn't essentially "hurt" your stomach, it just means it has to work harder to "cook". What do we eat when we're sick? SOUP. The idea here is that soup, a hot/warm broth and simple veggie, carbohydrate and protein ingredients are the easiest thing to digest, so it makes sense that hot water with or after your meals aids in efficient digestion of maximum nutrients. Haven't you noticed if you eat way too much greasy food or carbs, you feel like falling asleep? That food coma is brought on because your digestion is working too hard. You want SOUP in your belly for the healthiest digestion. Drink hot water.

chinese think cold water is bad for your health just because the quality of the water here is no good. If you drink cold water from the tap you will get sick. So you have to boil it first. Also the tea culture has the same roots, nobody likes to drink hot water because tasted horrible, so it's necessary to put some flavor in it.

My body always tells me not to drink cold water.

My body is wise.

I follow what it tells me.

That is enough to me.

I do not need any scientific evidence for something I feel everyday.

As Bruce said  Be hot water,my friend!

I believe there is no scientific basis for this but just merely cultural habits. Long ago in China there were no refrigerators. To get hot water you have to boil the water but how do you get cold water? Do you leave the boiled water outdoors to be cooled by the cold ambient or do you just collect cold water from outside? The answer is most likely to be the latter hence compared to boiled water, it will not be so safe to drink.

Consider the following  scientific facts:

1. Water starts to steam at around 70 degrees Celsius, Evidence of steam is the criteria for calling water hot.
2. Our body temperature is 37 degrees Celsius.
3. The temperature differential between our body temperature and 'hot' water is 33 degrees Celsius.
4. Water cannot be colder than 0 degrees Celsius before it becomes ice and the temperature differential between ice and our body temperature is 37 degrees Celsius.
5. Nobody has ever heard of physical damage done by ice on our body but everybody knows we can be scalded by hot water.
6. Thus hot water is more dangerous to our body than ice.

:Why do we then say cold water is less healthy than hot?

Science agrees that cold water shocks the stomach and often causes spasming or cramping.  It's not just based on Chinese medicine.

in the winter it keeps you warm.
in the summer (40C+) it keeps you cool. the logic here is it makes you sweat more therefore you are cool.

most people aren't willing to pay 1元 for a bottle of water.

but it does help kill all the nasty things that play merry havoc with your stomach.

Also (if your interested)

girls (in general) don't drink water when they are having their period (as my girlfriend informs me)
and there is no concept of cold beer.

:-)

I think Chinese drink hot water for both because out of custom and sanitary reasons. I studied both at the Peking Language Institute in 1981 and the Mandarin Training Center in Taipei (during the late 80's). Like most developing countries, you WANT to dring water that has been well boiled. I got tired of drinking the boiled water that one hot summer in Peking and began drinking the regular tap water. That was a little mistake. I got little white things in my intestines (小白虫). Fortunately they didn't cause any pain, and I took pills that killed them off.

Actually, during strenuous exercise, it's better to drink COLD water. Check it on Google. Cold water is actually absorbed faster than hot water or even water at body temperature. I've run marathons and you want both the weather and the wate r to be COLD.

There's no evidence that hot water is better than cold water; however...

There is evidence that a higher percentage of Chinese suffer from throat and mouth cancer :) Whether this is from pollution, smoking cigarettes, or hot water, or a combination of all, who knows. I know an american woman who was married to a Chinese, and last I spoke with her she told me how she could not understand how, at family dinners when she was married, so many Chinese family members would drink down hot tea, hot water, scolding hot soup, etc.

One reason, Chinese natural water is too poluted to drink !!!!

everybattery | offline Lv1 | 回答时间:2011.12.27 12:04 (0) | (1)

Because they believe that hot water is much healthier than cold water, for the high temperature can kill the bacteria. Another reason, the Chinese like drinking tea and tea need hot water to roll off. What's more, it is very warm to drink hot water in winter.
