In Spring 1919, Leo Stefanos was the sou chef at the Luxembourg Palace. He fell in love with young Princess Bassa, a remote relative of the royal family. Leo often treated the Princess with ice cream, which was a luxurious treat at that time.
Princess Bassa was the chosen bride as monarchs often set up arranged marriages to consolidate political alliances. After the announcement, Leo could not find Princess Bassa anywhere in the palace for a month. When Princess Bassa reappeared, she looked worryingly gaunt. Leo tried to tell the Princess that he loved her by writing "DOVE", meaning "Do you love me", with chocolate fudge topped on the ice-cream. Leo thought that the Princess would have gotten the message but Princess Bassa just sat there staring at the ice-cream until it melted.
A few days later, Princess Bassa got married. A year later, Leo was so depressed that he left the palace for the United States of America. Leo worked at a gourmet restaurant and later married the owner's daughter.
In 1946, Leo found the Chicago sweet shop--Dove Candies & Ice Cream. He recalled his memories when he came across an ice-cream truck, which reminded him of his love for Princess Bassa. Leo determined to create the chocolate coated ice-cream bar and named it "Dove", which became very popular.
One day, Leo received a letter from Princess Bassa, which was written more than a year before. In the letter, Princess Bassa said that she missed Leo and hoped to see him again. Eventually, Princess Bassa and Leo met each other but at her dying bed. It happened that she had never gotten the message written on the melted chocolate on the day she left the palace.
Leo knew that if the chocolate had not melted then, the Princess would have eloped with him. That's the story behind the Dove Bar, delicious ice-cream wrapped with bitter-sweet chocolate with the word "DOVE" on it. The DOVE chocolate also reminds all lovers to let him or her know at once if you love each other.
